Peer Mentoring Scholarships
DSAT is pleased to announce the launch of our Peer Mentoring Scholarship Program for teenagers and young adults with Down syndrome. The purpose of a Peer Mentor is to provide age-appropriate interactions and experiences for individuals with Down syndrome while working towards an identified academic or fitness goal.
- Academic Supports – support with developing and enhancing academic skills and providing tutoring support as needed.
- Example : A fellow high school student or college student is hired by the family to act in a mentoring capacity for an individual with Down syndrome and provide math tutoring or homework assistance 2 days a week. While the primary goal is to support the individual with Down syndrome with achieving the stated academic goal, the mentor also provides for age appropriate social interactions and hopefully, a true friendship. Tutoring may take place in a coffee shop or other age appropriate settings with peers.
- Fitness Supports – support with accessing fitness and recreational activities in the community.
- Example : A fellow high school student or college student is hired by the family to act in a mentoring capacity for an individual with Down syndrome to attend a fitness class 3 days a week. While the primary goal is to support the individual with Down syndrome in getting to the class and fully participating, the mentor also provides for age appropriate social interactions and hopefully, a true friendship.
DSAT reimburses families for up to $500 per semester for Peer Mentoring services. At this time families are responsible for finding and hiring the Peer Mentor. If you would like to explore this opportunity but need further assistance in finding a Peer Mentor, please contact us.
